What is an SIP?

A Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) is a smart, stress-free, and low-effort way to invest in mutual funds. Here you invest a fixed amount at regular intervals, usually every month (instead of a lump sum). Over time, these small contributions add up, thanks to the magic of compounding.

This approach benefits from rupee cost averaging, meaning you buy more units when prices are low and fewer when prices are high, helping to smooth out market volatility over the long term.

SIP allows you to invest without constantly monitoring the market. You only need to begin, and the rest is taken care of.

What is an SIP Calculator?

An SIP calculator is a quick, simple tool. All you have to do is provide the following information:

  • Your monthly investment amount

  • The number of years you want to stay invested

  • Your expected annual rate of return

The calculator instantly shows you how much your investments could grow over your chosen time frame, helping you plan and set realistic financial goals. While the actual returns will vary with market conditions, a conservative estimate for the expected rate of return is 13% per year (As of 13th May, 2025: the Nifty 50 has a CAGR of around 13.4% over the last two decades) .

While CAGR gives the average annual return over the entire period, rolling returns are also something that provides a more nuanced view by showing how returns have varied across different sub-periods. For example, the 5-year rolling returns for the Nifty 50 have typically ranged between 10-15% . Presenting a range based on rolling returns often gives investors a more realistic sense of what they might experience, rather than focusing solely on a single-point average.

The result? A clear picture of how much your SIP might grow over time.

MyFi’s SIP return calculator is built to give you clarity. Whether you’re planning for your dream home, your child’s education, or just better financial freedom, it’s got your back.

How Does the SIP Return Calculator Work?

Our monthly SIP calculator uses this tried-and-tested formula:
M = P × ({[1 + i]^n – 1} / i) × (1 + i)

Where:

  • M = Maturity amount or estimated return from the SIP

  • P = Monthly investment

  • i = Expected rate of return

  • n = Total number of months

    Example:
Say you invest ₹5,000/month for 10 years with an expected return of 12% annually.

  • i = 12/12 = 1% or 0.01

  • n = 10 × 12 = 120 months

Plug those into the formula and you’ll get a maturity value of around ₹11.6 lakhs. That’s nearly double your total investment. Pretty neat, right?

Note: Actual returns may vary due to market conditions, exit loads, and fund-specific expense ratios.

How to Use the MyFi SIP Calculator Online?

It’s super simple to calculate SIP returns online with our tool:

  1. Enter your monthly investment – How much will you contribute every month?

  2. Choose your investment duration – How many years do you plan to invest?

  3. Set an expected return rate – Based on your mutual fund’s past performance.

That’s it! Your estimated wealth at the end of the tenure will be displayed instantly.

One of the biggest advantages of SIPs is rupee-cost averaging: investing regularly, you buy more units when prices are low and fewer when prices are high, helping smooth out market volatility. Even starting small can add up: investing ₹5,000 a month for 5 years means you put in ₹3 lakh, and with a 12% annual return, your corpus could grow to around ₹4.1 lakh.

While actual returns will vary, using a 12% rate reflects the historical average annual return of indices like the Nifty 50 over the past 20 years. This demonstrates how disciplined, regular investing can help you accumulate significant wealth over time, regardless of market ups and downs.

What are the Different Types of SIPs?

When using a SIP calculator for long-term planning, knowing the type of SIP you choose can make a big difference in your returns.

1. Regular SIP – The Standard Investment Approach

A Regular SIP is the most common and straightforward option. You invest a fixed amount on a pre-decided date every month, building a consistent investing habit. It works best for those with stable incomes and long-term financial goals.

2. Top-Up SIP – Grow Your Investment with Your Income

A Top-Up SIP lets you increase your SIP contribution periodically. It aligns with your growing income, helping you build a larger corpus over time. When used with a SIP investment calculator, it can show the power of incremental investing.

3. Flexible SIP – Adjust as Life Happens

A Flexible SIP allows you to vary your monthly contributions based on your cash flow. You can increase your investment when you have surplus funds and hold back a little otherwise. This flexibility is ideal for freelancers and entrepreneurs.

4. Trigger SIP – For the Strategic Investor

Trigger SIPs let you automate your investments based on specific market events. You can set conditions like index movements or NAV changes to initiate your SIP. Best suited for experienced investors, this strategy can be modelled using a SIP return calculator.

5. Perpetual SIP – Invest Without an End Date

A Perpetual SIP continues until you decide to stop it. It’s ideal for long-term wealth creation goals like retirement or legacy planning. The power of compounding over decades is very powerful, you can see that by using a mutual fund SIP calculator. Initially, one could do it indefinitely, but recently, from October 2023 National Automated Clearing House (NACH) has introduced a maximum term of 30 years for setting up SIP from the start date. It is now even mandatory to specify the collection date, and it will not be allowed to perpetuity.

Benefits of SIPs

1. Compound growth:
SIPs allow your investments to earn returns, and then earn returns on those returns. Over the long term, this compounding effect significantly boosts your total wealth.

2. No market timing needed:
With SIPs, you invest consistently regardless of market conditions, which removes the stress and uncertainty of timing your entry into the market.

3. Reduces risk:
Through rupee cost averaging, SIPs lower the impact of market volatility, since you buy more units when prices are low and fewer when prices are high.

4. Flexible & automated:
You can start, stop, increase, or decrease your SIP anytime. It’s a low-maintenance investment method that fits easily into your monthly routine.

5. Tax-friendly options:
SIPs in ELSS (Equity Linked Saving Scheme) funds offer tax deductions under Section 80C, making them a great tool for both wealth creation and tax saving.

Common Mistakes to Avoid with SIPs

Even a simple investment tool like SIP can go wrong if not done right. Here are some common mistakes to avoid when using a SIP calculator online or investing in mutual funds:

1. Stopping SIPs during market downturns:
Many investors panic and stop SIPs when markets fall. As a result, they miss out on the chance to buy at lower prices and benefit from long-term recovery.

2. Not increasing the SIP amount over time:
If your income increases, your SIP should too. Use a SIP investment calculator to simulate top-up SIPs and see how much extra you can earn.

3. Choosing funds without research:
Blindly picking mutual funds without considering your goals and risk profile can lead to underperformance. Always research or consult a financial advisor.

4. Ignoring long-term discipline:
SIPs work best over the long term. Frequent withdrawals or switching between funds too often defeats the purpose of steady compounding.

FAQs

  1. Is SIP a product?
No, SIP is not a product; SIP, or a Systematic Investment Plan, allows an investor to invest a certain amount into a product like a mutual fund at set intervals – daily, weekly, monthly, etc.

  2. How much money can be invested monthly via an SIP?
It depends on your goals. For long-term wealth creation, even ₹1,000/month is a good starting point. Some funds allow for as little as ₹100 / month.

  3. Can I change the SIP amount later?
Yes. SIPs are super flexible. You can increase, decrease, pause, or stop your SIP anytime.

  4. Are SIP returns guaranteed?
No. SIP returns are based on market performance. But historically, equity SIPs have delivered solid long-term returns.

  5. Do SIPs only invest in equity funds?
Not at all. You can choose SIPs in debt, hybrid, ELSS, or even liquid funds, depending on your risk appetite.

  6. Is there a lock-in period?
Only for tax-saving SIPs like ELSS (3 years). Other SIPs have no lock-in, but long-term holding is recommended, and there may be fees for an early exit (exit load).
